For founder-led businesses that have outgrown DIY accounting

Know what your business can afford next.

I turn your accounting into a clear view of cash, obligations, profit, and runway before you hire, pay yourself, change prices, expand, or plan for a slow quarter.

This work is designed to complement the bookkeeper and tax adviser you already trust, with clearer operating answers between the close and the tax return.

Washington-licensed CPA. Former treasury and tax manager for roughly $3 billion of real estate across 45+ properties and 60+ entities. Useful numbers, calm systems, no conference-room theater.

The expensive version of messy

Revenue is coming in. The owner is still guessing.

The books may exist only for tax season. The P&L may arrive too late to change anything. Owner pay happens when the checking account looks healthy. A hiring decision waits because nobody can explain what the next six months of cash actually look like.

That mess does not stay inside the accounting file. It follows you into evenings, delays useful decisions, and keeps work on your plate that the business should have outgrown.

You do not need more financial homework. You need a back office that gives you time and choices back.

A useful time to call

This is probably for you if the business has outgrown improvising.

  • Revenue is growing, but the books still feel built for a smaller business.
  • You can get a P&L, but it arrives too late or does not answer the question in front of you.
  • Owner pay, hiring, tax set-asides, or expansion decisions still depend on the checking balance.
  • You are ready to hand off the financial mechanics without handing away control of the business.

When the system is the problem

The Financial Back Office Reset

A defined cleanup and implementation engagement for a business that has outgrown improvising. We find the accounting friction, connect it to the decisions being delayed, and build the first version of a financial system an owner can actually use.

A defined engagement — typically 4–6 weeks from first conversation to working system.

What changes

01

Know your cash

See what is available now, what is coming in, and how long the current plan can carry the business.

02

Know what is spoken for

Separate operating cash from taxes, payroll, debt, upcoming bills, and the obligations that make a healthy balance misleading.

03

Know what you can do next

Put owner pay, hiring, pricing, and expansion decisions against a base case, an uncomfortable case, and the actual runway.

What useful looks like

One page. The decisions hiding inside your books.

Clean books are the starting point. The Owner Brief turns them into a short monthly view of what changed, what needs attention, and which choices the numbers can support.

Illustrative Owner Brief

Example Studio

June 2026 close

Cash after 60-day obligations
$184,300
Tax set-aside still needed
$42,800
Monthly operating baseline
$71,600
Base-case runway
8.4 months

Decision signal

Delay the $12,500 monthly hire until receivables are below 38 days. Current cash supports an $8,000 owner distribution after set-asides.

Illustrative format only. Figures are fictional and do not represent a client or promise a result.

Decision-ready numbers

Your reports should answer the questions that keep following you home.

  • What can I safely pay myself without starving the business?
  • Can I afford this hire before I make the offer?
  • Which work is profitable, and which work is merely keeping everyone busy?
  • How much cash is actually available after taxes and upcoming obligations?
  • What needs to change before the business can run without me touching every number?

After the Reset

Keep the system useful, or model the next big move.

Ongoing support

The Owner's Monthly Close

For owners who want the financial back office to stay useful after the cleanup. Books, reporting, obligations, and a short owner brief arrive in a repeatable monthly rhythm.

A monthly rhythm: close, report, and a short decision conversation.

  • Monthly close and owner-ready reporting
  • Cash, profit, owner pay, and upcoming obligation view
  • A plain-English note on what changed and what needs attention
  • A regular decision conversation without hiring a full-time controller

Deeper scenario modeling

The Next Move Model

For a decision that needs more than one working session: a custom forecast, several operating scenarios, or inputs from the accounting team before the answer can be responsible.

A focused project — typically 2–4 weeks around one decision.

  • The decision translated into a usable financial model
  • Base case, uncomfortable case, and upside case
  • Cash, timing, tax-aware considerations, and reversibility
  • A recommendation on what must be true before you move

What it costs. Every engagement is scoped to the business, so fees are fixed per engagement and quoted after the first conversation. You will know the full number before any work begins — no hourly meters, no surprise invoices.

How the work starts

01

Send the unpolished version

Tell me what takes too long, what you do not trust, and which decision the business keeps postponing.

02

Scope the real problem

We separate cleanup, implementation, ongoing accounting, and decision work so you buy the help you actually need.

03

Build the useful version

The engagement has defined boundaries, concrete outputs, and a financial system tied to the way you run the business.

Why Breaking Free

The résumé part, briefly.

Seventeen years in corporate finance. Treasury and tax manager for a private-equity multifamily portfolio — roughly $3 billion of real estate across 45+ properties and 60+ entities. Tax, treasury, cash flow, multi-entity consolidation, and the monthly closes that made all of it visible. I hold a Washington CPA license.

Then I ran the same mechanics on my own life: left in 2022, moved the family abroad, planned the no-salary years, and came back on purpose. The point is not pristine reports. It is a business that is easier to understand, easier to operate, and less likely to consume the freedom it was meant to create.

Not a business question?

Important boundary

Accounting, reporting, and decision support. Not investment advice.

I hold a Washington CPA license, but I am not holding myself out here as a California-licensed CPA firm, CFP professional, registered investment adviser, broker, attorney, or insurance adviser. I do not provide securities recommendations, portfolio management, product sales, or legal advice. Services are offered only where permitted by applicable state licensing and practice rules. Before you inquire

Questions owners ask before inquiring

What do you need from me?
Read-only access to your books and one honest conversation. You are not expected to clean anything up first — arriving messy is the point.
What software do you work in?
QuickBooks Online and most common cloud bookkeeping systems. If your books live somewhere else, say so in the inquiry — most systems are workable.
How long until I see something useful?
The first deliverable of the Reset is the review-and-map, in the first two weeks.
What does it cost?
Fixed fee, quoted after scoping, known before you commit. See above.
Is this tax filing or investment advice?
No — accounting, reporting, and decision support. Full disclosure →

Start with the mess

Your inquiry does not need to arrive organized.

Tell me what feels messy right now. I will reply by email and tell you whether I see a useful, properly scoped way to help.

You are not expected to diagnose the accounting problem. That is part of the work. I reply personally, usually within two business days.

Your answers are emailed directly to Ashleigh and do not add you to the newsletter. Do not include account numbers, passwords, Social Security numbers, or other highly sensitive information. Privacy details.
